Waimānalo Mau a Mau: Preserving the Waiwai of Waimānalo
Mau – to continue, to preserve, to persevere, to endure.
To preserve our land and natural resources, building pilina (relationships) and understanding kuleana (responsibility) is important. Knowing place names, telling stories, enjoying a space, maintaining the beauty and function of a place…these are ways we build our pilina and our sense of kuleana to protect those places. And in protecting our land, we maintain and preserve the practices, values, and stories of the people that create the identity of our community.
Waimānalo Mau a Mau was a collaborative initiative dedicated to documenting and celebrating the beauty and richness of Waimānalo. The project was conducted by Mālama Honua Public Charter School, with support from Bishop Museum, DAGS, Hiʻohia Publishing, Kamehameha Schools Publishing, Waimānalo kupuna, and individual community members and supporters.
Our mission is to “Keep Waimānalo, Waimānalo” by honoring the ʻāina (land), pilina (relationships), and ʻŌiwi (cultural identity) that define our community. Through a blend of traditional and modern methods, we seek to capture the essence of Waimānalo, from its stunning natural beauty to the deep-rooted cultural practices that have been passed down through generations.
