Community Coral Garden
As part of the Taxonomy: Our Lives Depend On It public programming, the Invertebrate Zoology Collection staff presented an initiative to build a new coral reef display that reflects the interconnectivity and relationship-building needed to maintain our coral reefs and protect our environment.
The interactive art display invited the community to create unique coral polyps, tiny individual animals that live in large numbers as part of an interdependent community organism that forms a thriving coral reef.
The display grew and evolved throughout the month of November as audiences contributed coral polyps and collectively built the reef.
Throughout November, over three-hundred participants of every age contributed to our reef, including out-of-town visitors, museum members, local families, museum staff, volunteers, students, and board members.
The individual creativity of each participant blossomed as they designed their coral polyps. It was heart-warming to see the impressive and beautiful result of hundreds of people coming together and connecting to our coral garden community. Our deepest mahalo to all those who became members of our Coral Community Garden!
The completed coral reef will be on display in the Science Adventure Center while the renovation of the Hawaiian coral reef exhibit is underway. Check back with us for updates on the progress of the display!
Watch our coral garden grow!
Mahalo piha to all the community contributors who have joined us in building Bishop Museum’s Community Coral Garden. Below are the participants as of 11.30.22.
