Join us for a special book reading of Pau: The Last Song of the Kaua‘i ‘Ō‘ō by Tony Piedra and Mackenzie Joy in celebration of Makahiki o Nā Manu Nahele: The Year of the Forest Birds. Following each reading, Tony & Mackenzie will lead an interactive drawing activity, allowing attendees to engage creatively and connect with the story on a deeper level. Please note that the 11:00 am reading will be accompanied by ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i interpretation by Jodi Ascuena, original translator of Pau: The Last Song of the Kauaʻi ‘Ō‘ō.

Pau is a moving ecological fable and a lyrical tribute to the lost native forest bird, the ‘ō‘ō. The narrative begins millions of years ago, when the island of Kauaʻi first bloomed with life, color and sound, including the beautiful song of the ʻō‘ō bird. As human impact increased, the Kaua‘i ‘ō‘ō population dwindled, and in time, only a single Kauaʻi ō‘ō was singing, and inevitably, a day came when there were none: pau. This poetic and powerful story sheds light on key conservation issues such as invasive species and the delicate balance of island ecology. Their vibrant illustrations will inspire young naturalists to understand, protect, and defend our planet’s biodiversity while honoring and celebrating the life of the ‘ō‘ō.

While visiting the museum, be sure to explore the Science Adventure Center and experience the exhibit Lele o Nā Manu: The Splendor and Loss of Hawai‘i’s Birds. This exhibit brings extinct species to life and connects visitors with today’s rare and critically endangered Hawaiian birds, deepening the understanding of Hawai‘i’s unique avian heritage.
