The Stars Tonight

6:00-7:00 p.m.
7:30-8:30 p.m.

Show will have a quiz format. Families encouraged at the 6:00 p.m. show. Questions increase in difficulty in the 7:30 p.m. show. All ages welcome.

The Stars Tonight occurs on the third Friday of each month in 2024 in-person at the J. Watumull Planetarium.

Come study the stars, travel across the Earth and into our solar system, and share stories with us in our J. Watumull Planetarium! For September’s program, enter our Trivia Dome and test yourself with quiz questions spanning topics such as astronomy, natural sciences, and pop culture.

Stargazing with the Hawaiian Astronomical Society begins following the first show on the Great Lawn, weather permitting.

Guests for either show may access the planetarium lobby and lawn area before and after their showtime, between 5:30-9:00 p.m. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase.

Evening’s Schedule

  • 5:30 p.m. – Check in begins. Enjoy planetarium lobby exhibits, refreshments for sale, and sunset views over the Great Lawn.
  • 5:45 p.m. – Seating begins for 6:00 p.m. ticketholders.
  • 6:00 p.m. – The Stars Tonight planetarium show. One-hour-long seated theater experience.
  • 7:00 p.m. – Stargazing begins, weather permitting, with the Hawaiian Astronomical Society.
  • 7:15 p.m. – Seating begins for 7:30 p.m. ticketholders.
  • 7:30 p.m. – The Stars Tonight planetarium show. One-hour-long seated theater experience.
  • 9:00 p.m. – Event closes.

*Registration closes at 5:00 p.m., an hour before the scheduled program. Tickets are only available for purchase online. No on-site registration will be allowed at the event. No entry without confirmed pre-registration due to limited seating.

**Guests 3 and under will be expected to share a seat with an adult/guardian.

Program Details:

  • This is an in-person event at the J. Watumull Planetarium at Bishop Museum. No online options or recordings will be available.
  • Seating is first come, first served.
  • No late seating. Doors close at 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. when each program begins. Please plan to arrive no later than 10 minutes prior to your selected showtime.
  • Check-in and entry will be near Bishop Museum’s Shop Pacifica (front entrance and gift shop). The check-in table will be located at the top of the main staircase/ramp and to the right.
  • Check-in and viewing of the planetarium lobby will begin at 5:30 p.m.
  • No food or drink allowed in the planetarium.
  • The planetarium is fairly cool, you may want to bring a light sweater.
  • Evening parking is $5. Please pay for parking using a mobile phone through a posted Parklinq QR code (card payments only) or have your member parking sticker on your car. Please see Directions and Parking for more information.
  • Tickets are fully refundable until 5:00 p.m. the night of the show. Refunds can be issued over the phone at (808) 847-3511 or via email at visitorexperience@bishopmuseum.org. After 5:00 p.m., less than 1 hour before the scheduled start of the first show, ticket sales are non-refundable. Refunds not available for no-shows or late arrivals.
