Hawaiian Hall Renovation & Restoration
Bishop Museum has announced plans for the first major renovation and restoration of the iconic Hawaiian Hall Complex, which includes Hawaiian Hall, Polynesian Hall, the J.M. Long Gallery and Picture Gallery, and the Kāhili Room. Once complete, the Hawaiian Hall Complex will give Hawai‘i residents and visitors an opportunity to greater explore the depth of the Bishop Museum ’s collections with multi-sensory interpretation of the stories of Hawai‘i.
Local
television station KHON also has a story
on the project.
The Honolulu Advertiser also has an in-depth article that examines the renovation. (Offsite link)
Watch the KHON story here (requires Flash 7.0 or higher) or read the transcript here (offsite).
You can also download a full color 12 page brochure detailing the history of Hawaiian Hall, plans for it's renovation, and conceptual renderings of future exhibits or check out our press release for more information on the project.
A number of Bishop Museum staff and community leaders are working together with Ralph Applebaum Associates of New York , and Hawai‘i-based Mason Architects and Heath Construction Services for the overall planning, content development, design, and construction of the project.
Restoring
this jewel of late Victorian architecture
will cost nearly $21 million. Through
generous funding, the Hawaiian Hall project
has currently raised $13.5 million, including
$4 million from the Hawai‘i state government,
$2 million from the Office of Hawaiian
Affairs(OHA), $1 million from Princess
Abigail Kekaulike Kawananakoa, and grants
from both the JM Long and Vera M. Long
Foundations, the Atherton Family Foundation,
Cooke Foundation, and Victoria S. and
Bradley L. Geist Foundations, and many
others.
Additional help will be required to complete the vision of bringing Hawaiian Hall into the 21st century. Please consider making a donation, becoming a corporate sponsor, joining as a member, or including the Bishop Museum in your estate plans.
