Educator Resources

Welcome to our brand new Educator Resources page. We hope to supply teachers with resources to enhance a school visit to the museum with lesson plans that connect with current exhibits and guided education programs.

Hawai‘i Alive - Bringing Hawaiian Culture to Life

Hawaii Alive

The Hawai‘i Alive project is a cooperative work led by the Bishop Museum to bring share from our collections, library, and archives with the general public, especially teachers gathering resources to teach Hawaiian Language, History, and Culture in accordance with Hawai‘i Department of Education Content and Performance Standards.

While we welcome the general public to browse through the hundreds of resources presented here, the Hawai‘i Alive site was specifically created to allow teachers to gather resources for classroom instruction in accordance with the Hawai‘i Department of Education Content and Performance Standards.

Whales: Wonders of the Ocean

Learn all about the gentle giants of the sea in the robotic traveling exhibition of Whales: Wonders of the Ocean. The exhibit tells their 54-million-year-old story, from early life on land to their journey back to the sea. Life-size robotic whales and dolphins illustrate the major categories of whale origins, adaptations and behavior from feeding and reproduction to swimming, vocalization, respiration, and diving. This exhibition is created by Wonderworks Exhibits Company.

The exhibit will feature 8 robotic versions of modern cetaceans and their ancestors, including the following: Andrewsarchus, Basilosaurus, Humpback Whale, Killer Whale, Northern Right Whale, Sperm Whale, Atlantic White Sided Dolphin and Baby Gray Whale.

An additional Education Discovery Area has been created by the Bishop Museum for even more hands-on learning opportunities.

This guide offers a brief overview of the exhibit as well as educational activities for use in the classroom either prior or after your visit to the Bishop Museum. An Educator Check list has also been provided to assist in reserving a visit to the Bishop Museum as well as ensuring you have a ‘Whale’ of a time!
